First opening on Broadway in 1971, the story follows the final days of Jesus through the eyes of Judas Iscariot and loosely based on the Gospels. It describes the embracing of his teachings by his followers, the fear of the Priests losing control and plotting how to overcome this, and Judas’ increasingly concern at the motives of this new prophet.
Known as the first rock opera, many have added their own interpretations to the performance which have drawn critical acclaim, controversy and in some cases outright ban. It has also been the subject of several film and TV adaptations, the most recent being that produced by NBC (America) with a star-studded cast.
Featuring many well known songs (some receiving their own independent release and interpretation) including “Heaven on Their Minds,” Everything’s Alright,” “Pilate’s Dream,” “I Don’t Know How To Love Him,” “Gethsemane (I Only Want to Say),” “King Herod’s Song” and “Superstar.”
