Anne of Green Gables
Based on the original book which was first published in 1908, not long after the end of the Victorian era, ‘Anne of Green Gables’ has been masterfully adapted for the stage and features beautiful, new music and inspiring choreography. It is a family show for young and old and for those somewhere in between.
Set in the fictional village of Avonlea, the story begins with ageing siblings Matthew and Marilla Cuthbert, as they prepare for the arrival of a young orphan boy they intend to adopt, so that he might help them sustain their farm, ‘Green Gables’.
Mistakenly, they are sent a flame haired, free-spirited orphan girl, by the name of Anne Shirley, who turns their world of quiet predictability, completely upside down. Whilst Matthew takes an immediate shine to this feisty, freckle faced ragamuffin, Marilla is much slower to succumb to Anne’s charm.
Eventually however, not even straight laced Marilla can deny the joy that Anne brings to their lives, through her constant misadventures and boundless energy. Not surprisingly, it takes little time before both Matthew and Marilla love Anne as they would, if they’d each had a child of their own.
Many themes are entwined throughout this timeless, coming of age tale…friendship…intellectual growth and imagination…love and loss, but perhaps none is stronger than the theme of absolute devotion to home and family, which Anne Shirley (and that’s Anne with an ‘e’ at the end) embraces with every piece of her true and loyal heart.
