Hot on the heels of last year’s (2018) smash hit movie, the glitz and glamour of Goode’s department store will shine upon the Mittagong Playhouse for a limited season in June.
The lead up to Christmas of 1959 serves as the setting and the impact of European migration and rise of women’s liberation firmly placing their marks on Australian culture. Shy school leaver, Lisa, takes a summer job at the prestigious Sydney department store, Goode’s and quickly finds herself under the beguile and influence of the vivacious high-end fashion manager, Magda, and fellow sales “Ladies in Black”, Patty and Fay. As Lisa moves from bookish school leaver to finding her own place in life, she becomes a central figure to the change in everyone’s lives.
Based on Madeleine St John’s 1993 novel The Women in Black, Tim Finn has provided a fantastic musical score to Carolyn Burns’ stage adaptation. A true Australian story.
Whether you lived through the period or saw the movie, Ladies in Black is not to be missed! We sold out our last production, so ensure you book early to avoid disappointment!
Note: For the Saturday June 8th show, we encourage all patron’s to dress in their favourite 1950’s style. Prizes will be available.
